Ollie and I did baking together!

I have wanted to bake with Ollie for ages now!! Last night was the first time we actually went through with it though! I can't believe I didn't try it sooner, it was a great success and he was really interested in each stage. He had a go at everything himself too and tasted as he went. We made banana nut muffins and they were GORGEOUS! (Please excuse my bare cracked plaster walls in the background... we are saving to have them tiled).

He helped break the bananas in half and put them in the bowl (pulled a couple out and tasted a few before putting them back in though!)

He helped mash the bananas with a fork... this was hard work though, even for me as the bananas weren't super ripe and squishy!

When he thought I wasn't looking he tasted the sugar...

...and the flour, but it was not as nice.

We had a wooden spoon each and he had fun doing the mixing part... a few dollops ended up on the countertops though!

The end result!

We used this recipe but added vanilla essence and a handful of chopped nuts :)

  1. Wow that sounds like fun! I'm glad to see Ollie enjoyed it. I've been wondering if I should let Jackson help me in the kitchen a bit but so far he just helps make messes LOL

How proud would I be if he develops a love of cooking?

  6. You are very brave! I'll make jello or boxed cake mix with my kids, but nothing that I need to follow a recipe for. Looks great, though!

  7. I haven't tried baking with my daughter yet. She's only 16 months so I should probably wait a few more months. The muffins look yum!

  10. Awesome! I haven't tried baking with my now-two-year-old in a few months, I ought to try it again. He was totally bored by it at the time, even though it was chocolate chip cookies I was baking. Maybe we'll try muffins next time. Happy SITS Day! :)

  12. I love how they lick their fingers.

My little one tried baking for the first time on Family Day, Feb. 15 in Canada, and it was also a hit.

    Happy SITS day.

  16. Oh, how sweet! (Pun totally intended, lol)

A tip, if you don't mind, for easy to mash bananas: Pop a few bananas in the freezer when they start to brown (or just if you think you'll want banana bread/muffins in a few days or so) and let them freeze solid. Then defrost them (on the counter or in the microwave), snip off one end and squeeze the banana pulp out like a tube. Makes things so much easier :)

  18. It's great that you're doing all these cool activities with him!

I'm already 23, and I wish I could cook. Way to take advantage of those early years. :)

    Happy SITS day!

  19. Hello from SITS! That was super cute. Every time I try to bake with my 2 and 3 year old boys it ends up more like a concert mosh pit that ended with a food fight so I envy what looked like a peaceful toddler baking experience.

  22. Not that I'm the first to tell you this today (and I surely won't be the last) but Ollie is a little rock star! The pictures of him tasting everything are so cute. I wonder if I could get away with baking with my BFs kids and taking pictures? The youngest actually does really like to help - I'm just not sure 12 & 17 year old boys want me to advertise their talent in the kitchen!

  23. Good for you!! I'm such a control freak about making too much mess that I don't do this enough with my kids... I wish I had your patience. Awesome job mom!!!

I love the pictures of Ollie helping make the muffins. I am not a huge baker but should try it with my little one.

    Cheers :-)
